چکیده

We discuss the spectral energy distribution of three very low mass objects in Chamaeleon I for which ground-based spectroscopy and photometry as well as ISO measurements in the mid-infrared are available (Comerr on et al. 2000; Persi et al. 2000). One of these stars (Cha H1) is a bona-de brown dwarf, with mass 0.04{0.05 M. We show that the observed emission is very well described by models of circumstellar disks identical to those associated to T Tauri stars, scaled down to keep the ratio of the disk-to-star mass constant and to the appropriate stellar parameters. This result provides a rst indication that the formation mechanism of T Tauri stars (via core contraction and formation of an accretion disk) extends to objects in the brown dwarf mass range.

Exploring Brown Dwarf Disks

We discuss the spectral energy distribution of three very low mass objects in Chamaeleon I for which ground-based spectroscopy and photometry as well as ISO measurements in the mid-infrared are available (Comerón et al. 2000; Persi et al. 2000). One of these stars (Cha Hα1) is a bona-fide brown dwarf, with mass 0.04–0.05 M⊙. We show that the observed emission is very well described by models of...

A Surprising Reversal of Temperatures in the Brown-dwarf Eclipsing Binary 2mass J05352184−0546085

The newly discovered brown-dwarf eclipsing binary 2MASS J05352184−0546085 provides a unique laboratory for testing the predictions of theoretical models of brown-dwarf formation and evolution. The finding that the lower-mass brown dwarf in this system is hotter than its higher-mass companion represents a challenge to brown-dwarf evolutionary models, none of which predict this behavior. Here we ...

How Dry Is the Brown Dwarf Desert?: Quantifying the Relative Number of Planets, Brown Dwarfs and Stellar Companions around Nearby Sun-like Stars

Sun-like stars have stellar, brown dwarf and planetary companions. To help constrain their formation and migration scenarios, we analyse the close companions (orbital period < 5 years) of nearby Sun-like stars. By using the same sample to extract the relative numbers of stellar, brown dwarf and planetary companions, we verify the existence of a very dry brown dwarf desert and describe it quanti...

Exploring brown dwarf disks: A 1.3mm survey in Taurus

We have carried out sensitive 1.3mm observations of 20 young brown dwarfs in the Taurus star-forming region, representing the largest sample of young substellar objects targeted in a deep millimeter continuum survey to date. Under standard assumptions, the masses of brown dwarf disks range from .0.4 to several Jupiter masses. Their relative disk masses are comparable to those derived for coeval...

MOA-2007-BLG-197: Exploring the brown dwarf desert⋆

We present the analysis of MOA-2007-BLG-197Lb, the first brown dwarf companion to a Sun-like star detected through gravitational microlensing. The event was alerted and followed-up photometrically by a network of telescopes from the PLANET, MOA, and μFUN collaborations, and observed at high angular resolution using the NaCo instrument at the VLT. From the modelling of the microlensing light cur...
